Pingali Venkayya was a great Indian freedom fighter, scholar, and visionary who is remembered as the designer of the Indian National Flag. He was born on 2 August 1876 in Bhatlapenumarru village, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. A multi-talented personality, Pingali Venkayya was also a freedom fighter, linguist, geographer, and educator.
Pingali Venkayya was deeply influenced by the Indian independence movement and Mahatma Gandhi. He believed that a national flag was essential to unite Indians and inspire the spirit of freedom. After years of research and dedication, he designed a flag that symbolized unity, sacrifice, peace, and courage. In 1921, he presented his design to Mahatma Gandhi at the Indian National Congress session in Bezwada (Vijayawada).
His original design underwent modifications over time, and finally, on 22 July 1947, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the present tricolour—saffron, white, and green with the Ashoka Chakra—as the National Flag of independent India. Pingali Venkayya’s vision played a foundational role in shaping this powerful national symbol.
Apart from designing the flag, he actively participated in the freedom struggle and promoted education and national awareness. Despite his immense contribution, he lived a simple life and did not receive much recognition during his lifetime.
Pingali Venkayya passed away on 4 July 1963. Today, he is remembered with great respect as a symbol of patriotism and dedication. His legacy lives on every time the Indian National Flag is hoisted, reminding the nation of unity, freedom, and sacrifice. 🇮🇳
