Shiv Prasad Gupta was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and actively participated in the Indian freedom struggle. He was associated with the Indian National Congress and took part in major movements such as the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Civil Disobedience Movement. He was imprisoned several times by the British government for his nationalist activities and remained steadfast in his commitment to independence.
One of his most significant contributions was in the field of education and culture. He played an important role in supporting the establishment and growth of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), believing that education was essential for national awakening. He also founded the famous Bharat Mata Temple in Varanasi, dedicated to Mother India, symbolizing unity and patriotism beyond religion and caste.
