
Bhagwan Das was a renowned Indian philosopher, educationist, writer, and freedom fighter who made significant contributions to India’s intellectual and national life. He was born on 12 January 1869 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. From an early age, he showed deep interest in Indian philosophy, spirituality, and social reform.
Dr. Bhagwan Das was closely associated with the Indian freedom movement and strongly believed that India’s independence must be rooted in its cultural and spiritual traditions. He actively supported Mahatma Gandhi and participated in national movements, promoting non-violence, self-discipline, and moral values.
He was also a prominent scholar of Indian philosophy and Theosophy. His writings focused on Vedanta, ethics, religion, and human unity. He worked to present Indian philosophical ideas to both Indian and Western audiences in a clear and scholarly manner. His intellectual work helped revive pride in India’s ancient wisdom during colonial rule.
Dr. Bhagwan Das played an important role in the development of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and contributed greatly to the promotion of higher education in India. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to education and philosophy, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955, one of India’s highest civilian honors.
He passed away on 18 September 1958. Dr. Bhagwan Das is remembered as a great thinker and patriot who dedicated his life to the service of knowledge, culture, and the nation.
