Kanailal Dutta was a young and fearless Indian revolutionary who played a significant role in the freedom struggle against British rule. He was born on 31 August 1888 in Chandannagar (then under French rule, now in West Bengal). From an early age, he was inspired by nationalist ideas and dedicated himself to revolutionary activities.
Kanailal Dutta was an active member of the Anushilan Samiti, a prominent revolutionary organization in Bengal that aimed to overthrow British rule through armed resistance. He believed that sacrifice and bold action were necessary to awaken the nation against colonial oppression.
He is best remembered for his role in the Alipore Bomb Case (1908). During the investigation, a government approver named Narendra Gosain was responsible for betraying several revolutionaries. To prevent further damage to the movement, Kanailal Dutta, along with Satyendranath Bose, decided to eliminate Gosain inside the Alipore Jail. Kanailal courageously shot Gosain, fully aware that the act would lead to his own execution.
Kanailal Dutta was arrested immediately after the incident and was sentenced to death. He was hanged on 10 November 1908 at the young age of 20. He faced death with courage and dignity, becoming one of the youngest martyrs of India’s freedom struggle.
Kanailal Dutta is remembered as a symbol of youthful bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism. His martyrdom inspired many young Indians to dedicate their lives to the cause of independence.
