H. D. Deve Gowda is a senior Indian politician and statesman who served as the 12th Prime Minister of India from 1 June 1996 to 21 April 1997. He is known for his grassroots politics, simplicity, and strong commitment to farmers and rural development.
Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda was born on 18 May 1933 in Haradanahalli village, Hassan district, Karnataka. He began his political career at the local level and gradually rose through years of dedicated public service. He was deeply influenced by socialist ideas and leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia.
Before becoming Prime Minister, Deve Gowda served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, where he earned a reputation for administrative efficiency and pro-farmer policies. His focus on irrigation projects, rural infrastructure, and social welfare brought him wide respect.
