
Bhulabhai Desai was a prominent Indian freedom fighter, lawyer, and political leader who played an important role in India’s struggle for independence. He was born on 13 October 1877 in Valsad, Gujarat. From an early age, he showed great intelligence and interest in public affairs, which later shaped his career in law and politics.
Bhulabhai Desai was one of the most respected lawyers of his time and used his legal knowledge to challenge British authority. He became actively involved in the Indian freedom movement and joined the Indian National Congress. He was elected to the Central Legislative Assembly, where he strongly spoke against unjust British policies and demanded greater rights and self-rule for Indians.
He is especially remembered for the Desai–Liaquat Pact (1945), an important attempt to bring cooperation between the Congress and the Muslim League during the final phase of the freedom struggle. Although the pact did not fully succeed, it showed his vision for unity and peaceful negotiation at a critical moment in Indian history.
During the Quit India Movement, Bhulabhai Desai was arrested by the British and imprisoned. He fell ill during his imprisonment and passed away on 6 May 1946 while still in custody. His death was a great loss to the nation.
