
Dr. Zakir Husain was a distinguished educationist, freedom fighter, and statesman who served as the 3rd President of India. He was born on 8 February 1897 in Hyderabad (now in Telangana). Dr. Zakir Husain is remembered for his lifelong dedication to education, national integration, and democratic values.
Dr. Zakir Husain played an important role in the Indian freedom movement and was closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi. He believed that education was the strongest foundation for a free and united India. He was one of the founders of Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution established to promote nationalist education free from British control. As an educationist, he worked tirelessly to reform the education system and make it more inclusive and value-based.
After independence, Dr. Zakir Husain held several important positions. He served as the Governor of Bihar and later as the Vice-President of India. In 1967, he became the first Muslim to be elected President of India. His presidency was marked by dignity, simplicity, and moral authority. Sadly, he was also the first President to die in office, passing away on 3 May 1969.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to education and public service, Dr. Zakir Husain was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1963.
